No, I actually had installed g++ (and compiled boost, gmp, mpfr etc. myself) prior to trying to install polymake. But I didn't compile gcc/g++ myself, instead I used the version that comes with the OS because that's supposed to be adapted to the Ubuntu quirks. It might be just that Mint 13RC http://...
